Labs (30%)
There will be 10 lab activities during the semester. Some of the labs will include a brief lecture or presentation of a case study followed by a group discussion. Other labs will include a computer activity that must be completed during lab time. Student will work in pairs on computer activities. Participation, discussion and collaboration are important components of lab.
You will be penalized for missing a lab period, for arriving late, or leaving before the activity is complete.**
- Missing 1 lab will result in a 2% penalty on your final average.
- Missing 2 labs will result in a 5% total penalty on your final average.
- Missing 3 labs will result in a 10% total penalty on your final average.
- For each lab, the instructor reserves the right to penalize 1% on your final average for arriving late or leaving before the lab activity is complete.
Participating in lab and completing the lab activity (when applicable) is worth 50% of the grade for the lab. After each lab, students will complete a brief quiz or worksheet, which is worth 50% of the grade for the lab. Each lab grade is worth 3% of your final average.
Your Lab Average is the average (mean) grade for the 10 labs minus any penalties for unexcused absences or lateness. If you have an absence from lab, you must still try to complete the lab activity and the lab quiz on your own. If you do not complete the activity and quiz, you will receive a zero on the lab and this will further reduce your lab average. Entirely missing one lab will result in a 2% attendance penalty and 3% loss from the zero (5% total). Typically, to get an A in this course you must complete every lab.
**Note: See the Attendance Policy for details on what constitutes an excused absence from lab.
Exams (20%)
There will be two exams given during the semester. Each exam will be given in the evening (outside of normal class time). This gives you more than an hour to complete the exam. Also, we will have three lecture days off during the semester to compensate for this extra time commitment. Check the online schedule for exam dates and times. You will be required to complete the exams on the specified dates and times. If you miss an exam, you will receive a zero.**
**Note: See the Attendance Policy for details on what constitutes an excused absence from an exam.
Project & Homework (20%)
Students will work in groups of two on a research project, which will include a report and presentation. There may also be a few homework assignments leading up the the project. The report, presentation, and homework together are worth 20% of your final grade. The report will be turned in using the Turnitin feature on Blackboard. This service will check your paper against other papers submitted not only at Siena but across the Internet.
Final Exam (20%)
There is a mandatory final exam in this course. You must earn 90% or higher on the final exam to earn an A in the course.
Lecture Attendance & Participation (10%)
Attendance and participation is worth 10% of your final average. The instructor reserves the right to penalize students up to 10% for excessive absence, lateness, disruptions, or lack of participation during lecture.
Attendance Policy:
A student is expected to attend every class and laboratory for which he or she has registered. It is the student's responsibility to be aware of this policy.
Students should be aware of the following penalties:
- Students can receive up to a 10% penalty toward their final average for excessive absence, lateness, disruption, or lack of participation during lecture.
- In addition to a potential 10% penalty for missing lecture, student are penalize 2% for the first unexcused lab absence, 5% total for the second, and 10% total for the third.
- In addition, student will be penalized for missed work as a result of unexcused absences. Students will receive a zero on any missed exam or quiz. Student will receive a zero on any missed lab unless they are able to makeup the work on their own.
If a serious emergency or medical issue arises, students can be excused (not penalize) and allowed to makeup missed work. However, the instructor will only consider serious, documented emergencies and issues. For illness or medical emergencies, students WILL have to show documentation (a doctor's note or equivalent) that verifies the excuse.
For family emergencies, funerals, or other serious commitments, student should contact academic affairs or the counseling center. If the emergency is serious, an authorized school official will contact your instructors regarding your absence. If an excuse is not documented or if it is not serious enough to contact an authorized school official then the student will get a zero on all missed work. The instructor makes the final decision to excuse or not to excuse an absence. If you are concerned that an absence will not be excused, you should contact the instructor as soon as possible.
Academic Integrity
Cheating on a report, a homework, or an exam will result in an automatic grade of zero. In addition, you will receive a letter grade reduction on your final grade for the semester. If you are caught cheating a second time, you will automatically fail the course and a formal letter describing your misconduct will be send to the academic affairs office.
The Project and lab activities (including the lab quiz) are to be completed in pairs. You are permitted to collaborate with your lab partner on all lab related work. You are permitted to collaborate with your project partner on all project related work. However, your project and lab work should be the work of the project pair or lab pair, and should not include any work from other lab or project groups.
