What is this course all about?

Information technologies and strategies for managing them can change rapidly, but the information systems principles guiding both remain timeless.

In this course...

  • We will learn essential information systems principles.
  • We will see these principles at work in real business cases.
  • We will apply these principles using Access and Excel to business cases.

What do you have to do in this course?

Quizzes: The course requires a lot of reading and it is essential that you buy the textbook. To make sure students are keeping up with the reading there will be weekly in-class quizzes (30% of your grade).

Attendance: Discussions are an important part of lecture. To help motivate students to participate, a portion of your grade (10%) will be based on attendance and participation.

Homework: Learning to use Access and Excel in business cases is an essential course goal. There will be several homework assignments (20%) that will require you to solve problems by designing databases and spreadsheets.

Report & Presentation: Improving technical communication skills is one of the goals of this course. Students will work in groups to prepare a research report and presentation (20%).

Final Exam: There is a mandatory final exam (20%) that will be given during final exam week.
