Accessing Files Remotely

WinSCP for Windows

You can access the files in your account (SOSAD) remotely by using a program called WinSCP

WinSCP Setup Instructions

  1. Click on the Download WinSCP link and save the setup file to your Desktop.
  2. After saving the winscpsetup.exe file, click and run the installation program until it finishes. At the end of the installation process, you will be prompted to run/launch WinSCP.
  3. Run WinSCP and you will be prompted to login; Click the New button to create a new login session.
  4. Enter the following information:

    Host name: olsen.cs.siena.edu
    User name: use your SOSAD username
    File protocol: SCP


  5. Click Save to save the login session information. The name of the session will be username@olsen.cs.siena.edu (where username should be your actual SOSAD username).

Using WinSCP

  1. Once the session information is saved, you can click on the stored session (username@olsen.cs.siena.edu) to directly connect.
  2. Note: You will have to type your password each time you login. There may be a warning message before you can connect; click OK to proceed.
  3. After you Login, you will see a split screen that will show the files in your SOSAD home folder (on the right) and the files in your local My Documents folder (on the left).
  • Uploading: You can drag and drop files from left to right if you want to copy a local file to your SOSAD home folder (called uploading a file).
  • Downloading: You can drag and drop files from right to leftif you want to copy a remote file to your local My Documents folder (called downloading a file).
  • Warning: If you download a file and edit/change it, be sure to save it and then upload it back to your SOSAD home folder, otherwise you will not be able to access the changes you made when you open the file from a computer on the SOSAD network. When editing a file at home always remember to save the file and upload it back to your SOSAD home folder.
